Do not climb up, pull at the branch or stand beneath a suspended limb. Trees and roofing may remain unstable after wind stops. Keep away from damaged wiring and rooms with signs of structural movement. Immediate danger requires the appropriate emergency or utility response, not an online roofing request.
From a safe place, note the event time, the approximate contact point and whether water entered afterward. A few clear observations are more useful than risky close-up photographs.
The covering is only the outer layer
A scrape can disturb the surface, while a heavier impact can affect the deck beneath it. The deck supports the covering and may be concealed until inspection or removal. Adjacent roof lines, penetrations and interior signs also matter. A small exterior mark does not establish the full extent of damage.
Conversely, the presence of a branch does not prove that an entire roof requires replacement. The assessment should describe observed damage, uncertainty and the sound material around the affected area.
Coordinate tree work and roofing
Tree removal may need a qualified tree professional before a roofer can safely reach the area. Clarify who is responsible for each step. Moving debris without a coordinated plan can expose an opening or disturb already damaged components.
Where temporary protection is appropriate, ask what it covers and what remains to be assessed. Temporary work is not the final repair, and scheduling depends on weather, access and the availability of the necessary trades.
Build the permanent scope from the findings
Ask whether the work includes covering, underlayment, sheathing, flashing and any related structural review. Each is a different part of the assembly. The repair should connect to sound material and explain expected appearance differences when an exact match is unavailable.
Save dated photos, estimates and receipts. If you intend to contact an insurer, follow its documentation instructions without assuming coverage. After repair, keep a record of any recurring interior symptom so follow-up can focus on the original event and completed work.

Yes. Damage may be concealed or extend along the impact path. A professional assessment is needed to establish scope; the absence of a hole does not settle it.
